What is EMDR therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy which helps people process and reframe distressing memories. It targets negative beliefs and emotional triggers associated with trauma, depression, and anxiety, allowing your brain to integrate those memories in a healthier way.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues—while recalling distressing memories. This process helps form new, more adaptive neural connections, reducing emotional distress and increasing resilience.

How does EMDR work?

During an EMDR session, clients remain fully conscious and in control.

The therapy follows eight structured phases which guide our clients through a safe and supportive healing process:

  • Phase 1: History taking and treatment planning
The therapist gathers background information, including trauma, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Together, you develop a treatment plan which addresses your most distressing memories.
  • Phase 2: Preparation and resourcing
You’ll learn grounding techniques, relaxation methods, and coping skills. A safe space is established so you can face difficult memories without becoming overwhelmed.
  • Phase 3: Assessment
You identify a specific memory, negative belief, and emotions associated with it. A positive belief is introduced as a goal to replace the negative one.
  • Phase 4: Desensitization and reprocessing
With bilateral stimulation, you focus on the memory while your brain begins to process it in a healthier, less distressing way.
  • Phase 5: Installation of positive beliefs
You strengthen new, positive beliefs about yourself—like changing “I am powerless” to “I am in control.”
  • Phase 6: Body scan
You check for any residual physical tension or discomfort, aiming to feel neutral or calm when recalling the memory.
  • Phase 7: Closure
The therapist ensures you feel grounded, reinforcing coping skills and emotional stability.
  • Phase 8: Reevaluation
Progress is assessed, and the therapist determines whether further reprocessing is needed.

EMDR: Safe, effective, and compassionate

EMDR is a well-researched therapy endorsed by major psychological organizations.

Clients remain in control and can pause the process at any time. Sessions are carefully structured to minimize distress and prevent overwhelming emotions.

Our therapists incorporate grounding and relaxation techniques throughout, ensuring emotional safety.

Even though some discomfort may arise, the ultimate goal is lasting healing and resilience.
